چکیده

The Paschen beta (1.2822 μm) emission line found in the near-infrared spectra of T-Tauri stars (TTSs) is believed to trace the accretion of material onto the central star. We present spectroscopic data which suggests that this may not always be the case. The technique of spectro-astrometry is used by us to measure positional displacements in the Paβ emission from four T-Tauri stars, namely DG Tau, V536 Aql, LkHα 321 and RW Aur. We also observed the optical forbidden emission from these sources, for example the [SII]λλ6716, 6731, [OI]λλ6300, 6363 and [NII]λλ6548, 6583 lines. Forbidden emission lines are formed in the outflows that accompany the evolution of protostars and so are ideal to use as a comparison to confirm that the measured offsets in the Paβ emission are indeed due to outflowing material. Models based on the magnetospheric accretion theory have been the most successful to date in explaining the origin of atomic hydrogen emission lines. Yet we see that the line profiles of the sources showing displacement in their Paβ emission all have features that the magnetospheric accretion model has so far failed to explain, such as broad full width half maxima, large wings and an absence of red shifted absorption features. The failure of the models to explain the presence of large extended wings in the line profiles is particularly interesting in the context of this study as in all cases it is in the extended wings that we measure offsets in position with respect to the source.

Optical Spectroscopy of Embedded Young Stars in the Taurus-Auriga Molecular Cloud

This paper describes the first optical spectroscopic survey of class I sources (also known as embedded sources and protostars) in the Taurus-Auriga dark cloud. We detect 10 of the 24 known class I sources in the cloud at 5500–9000 Å. All detected class I sources have strong Hα emission; most also have strong [O I] and [S II] emission. These data – together with high quality optical spectra of T...

Forbidden emission lines in Herbig Ae/Be stars

The absence of high velocity redshifted forbidden lines in classical T-Tauri stars (Appenzeller et al. 1984; Edwards et al. 1987) has long be taken as evidence of opaque circumstellar disks: disks which occlude the receding component of the stellar wind or outflow, allowing only the blueshifted emission to be observed. There has been some controversy in the literature recently as to whether a d...

A new Classical T Tauri object at the sub-stellar boundary in Chamaeleon II

We have obtained lowand medium-resolution optical spectra of 20 candidate young low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the nearby Chamaeleon II dark cloud, using the Magellan Baade telescope. We analyze these data in conjunction with near-infrared photometry from the 2-Micron All Sky Survey. We find that one target, [VCE2001] C41, exhibits broad Hα emission as well as a variety of forbidden emissio...

Wind diagnostics and correlations with the near-infrared excess in Herbig Ae/Be stars

Intermediate dispersion spectroscopic observations of 37 Herbig Ae/Be stars reveal that the equivalent widths of their [OI]λ6300 andHα emission lines, are related to their nearinfrared colours in the same fashion as the T-Tauri stars. Such a correlation strongly supports the idea that the winds from Herbig Ae/Be stars arise in the same manner as those from TTauri stars, i.e. through accretion d...
